Fujii Hideki (1934 -):

Born in Tokyo in 1934, Fujii became interested in photography while still in high school when he happened upon a movie theater fire which he photographed. This photo was published in a local newspaper which literally became the spark that led Fujii to pursue a career as a professional photographer. In the 1950s he entered photography school at Nihon University’s Art Department in Tokyo and graduated in 1957. During his days as a student he also apprenticed under Japanese photo great Shotaro Akiyama as his photo assistant from 1953 to 1956. Under Akiyama’s tutelage he honed his skills as a fashion and studio photographer. Upon graduating from university Fujii was employed with Fujin Seikatsu-sha publishing as a fashion photographer for their Fukuso magazine. Next, from 1960 to 1963 he worked as an advertising photographer with the Nihon Design Center whose majors clients included Toyota Motors, Asahi Kasei, and Nikon Camera. In 1963 Fujii turned freelance and in 1965 accepted his first major advertising commission as the photographer of Max Factor's Japan campaign. That same year he established Studio F. Throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s Fujii has garnered several awards for his work including; the Spanish Newspaper Gold Prize (1965), Asahi Shimbun Art Directors Club Silver Prize (1973), the Lion d’Artgent Award 20th Festival International du Film Publication Cannes (1985), the New York Art Directors Club Silver Prize (1985), the Japan Photographic Society’s Best of the Year Award (1985), and the Japan Advertising Photographers Association Gold Prize (1986). Fujji continues to be an active photographer, lecturer and teacher and is currently the Principal of the Nihon Shashin Geijutsu Senmon Gakko (Nippon Photography Institute) in Tokyo. He was also the former President of Japan Advertising Photographers Association and has published eight books showcasing his work as well as mounting nearly sixty exhibitions of his work from 1970 to the present.
